After a tasty lunch at Hurricane Utah’s Main Street Café, we head south on Sky Ranch Road, past a desert-dream real estate development called Grassy Meadows Sky Ranch that features its own airstrip and properties offered at up to $1.8m. The road abruptly segues to well-graded gravel, and we zip south away from irrigated trees.
Howard Carpenter placed a brass cap on an iron pipe at Mile 41 near the foot of Hurricane Ridge, he wrote, but we didn’t find it. The USGS map shows the marker adjacent to Sky Ranch Road, but it’s nowhere to be found. Seasoned cadastral surveyors advised us that metal detectors are sometimes required to locate markers submerged by the desert. We stop at the spot indicated on the map and look west.
