We couldn’t find the monument; neighbors explained that a petty thief, chased by police from nearby Coffeyville, Kansas, had failed to round the corner from Montgomery County Road 1200 onto NS 418 Road and crashed into the survey monument some years earlier. Our GPS device nudged us toward the purported location between the two hay fields shown above.
