AZ-UT Mile 260: Red Mesa

Next location: westbound eastbound

Near AZ-UT Mile 260 looking east toward Red Mesa at 36o 59’ 53.2468” N, 109o 21′ 10.476” W

We turn north off of US 160 at Four Corners Regional Health Center on Navajo Road 35 and watch the GPS to determine when we arrive at the 37th parallel since there are no border clues: The Navajo Nation has no reason to maintain state line fences. The map shows a couple of arroyos bearing northeast, so we stop shy of the line to avoid scrambling up and down arroyo banks; we walk northeast about a mile and a half up to the line. According to the map, the monument for Mile 160 should be at 36o59′ 39.792″ N, 109o 21’ 10.512” W, but we can’t find it. It’s easy to imagine that a marker placed 123 years ago could have been entirely washed away. So we end up on a ridge close to the official spot, looking east at Red Mesa, where grasses pass the time idly drawing arcs on the delicate sand.
