About

The Project

The borders between Utah and Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico, and Kansas and Oklahoma all fall on the 37th Parallel — 37 degrees north latitude.

This site explores not only these borderlands– along with their origins, history, and current status– but also the notion of the political imposition of a Cartesian line on a landscape that’s homeland for many Indigenous nations.

The Author

Chris Seiberling, MFA, has spent years traveling and photographing in the southwest. He has been working on the 37th Parallel project for 10 years and continues to deepen his respect for the Indigenous inhabitants of the region as well as for the descendants of settlers who have learned to love and respect the land.

Thank you for the information provided here. I am interested in older surveys because I am wanting to write a play having to do with the survey of the Federal Territory (now the District of Columbia) in 1792. And I am specifically interested in the 37th Parallel because, 1) I live on it, and 2) I am developing a planetarium show about it. The whole thing, not just the stretch you cover. It so happens that I have a colleague in the planetarium world who also lives on it (Bowling Green, KY), so we could show the give versions of the same program in both places and it would be pertinent to people living in each locale.

I also appreciate good writing, so am impressed with your interesting narratives about the places you’ve visited, even though I’ve only read a few so far AZ/UT). I would be interested in knowing if you would be willing to share some of your photos and give me permission to use them in the planetarium show. I am very early in the process but plan to share photos from other interesting spots around the world.
